An elderly Afghan man questions Sgt. Timothy Stokes as Squad 2 2nd Platoon of Fox Company, 2nd Battallion 6th Marines, conduct an operation in Marjah, Afghanistan, Friday, July 23, 2010. Fox Company of the 2-6 Marines, based at Camp Lejeune NC, took over this section of central and eastern Marjah one month ago, relieving 1-6 Marines who had conducted the initial assault into this Taliban stronghold in February. Marjah is a farming area constructed in the 1950's by USAID, and was known as "little America." After the Marine invasion in summer 2009, despite being considered a "friendly" area because of it's historical ties to the US, it soon became a Taliban stronghold after fighters were pushed out of other districts. 2-6 Marines are implementing a "COIN" strategy that is people focused, and hopes to expand bubbles of security that the Marines have established, against a backdrop of more frequent and violent Taliban attacks.
