The phenomenon of the Maras- violent Central American street gangs that originated in Los Angeles- has become a nightmare in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. After years of crime and extreme violence, in 2005 the gangs became the targets of repression from their governments, utilizing methods- torture, disappearance, and extra-judicial killing- reminiscent of the counterinsurgency wars of the 1980's.
